Born in Singapore, Mr Ong came to Australia in 1951 and qualified as a Civil Engineer.
Mr Ong was the convenor of a Chinatown steering committee which undertook Chinatown Project Stage II – the continued redevelopment of this historic area which later became incorporated into the Melbourne Chinatown Historic Precinct Act.
One of the centrepieces of this area was the Museum of Chinese Australian History with Mr Ong playing a key role in the initial fund-raising activities. He remains a Trustee of the Museum.
Mr Ong also helped in the promotion of Chinese cultural activities in Melbourne by initiating with others the establishment of the Melbourne Dragon Boat Racing Competition and the August Moon lantern Festival.
